Abstract

Accompanied by aging, the increase of chronic diseases generates excessive consumption of medications that consequently lead the elderly to self-medication with the purpose of alleviating and reducing pain or the illnesses that cause it bringing risks and damages to the health and quality of life of the same. It can be said that understanding the aging process is important not only to understand the etiology associated with the degenerative processes that are associated with it, but fundamentally to know and develop strategies that attenuate the effects of aging. It is of great importance that the population see the elderly as an active person in society being able to generate transformations, raise their self-affirmation and share knowledge. With these positive points the promotion of health to other elderly connected to the community and his family becomes valid. Aiming at this, a bibliographic review was carried out through research articles researched in a database of the Health area and specialized magazines in electronic sites such as: Scielo, PubMed and Medline. So evaluate ways through health and education to promote quality of life for the elderly. Health education practices lack methods that aim at the diversity of aging and associate them with the conditions that surround the citizen (such as culture, values, religion, among others). Self-medication is a serious act that can be practiced irrationally inappropriately and carries risks that are sometimes inconvertible. Eliminating self-medication is practically unlikely, but it can be diminished through pharmaceutical care by monitoring the elderly, promoting rational use and working on guidance, training, and providing quality primary care. Drug therapy should be done in a rational way to favor the quality of life of the elderly.
