Abstract

Breastfeeding is a safe and effective way of promoting the health of the mother and child, with several benefits and being a practice without financial costs, but non-adherence to breastfeeding and early weaning are still recurring situations today. However, through adequate professional support, it is possible to change this scenario, so the objective of this study is to identify the importance of health communication by the nursing professional in adhering to breastfeeding. The present study was characterized as a descriptive bibliographic review, with a qualitative approach. The research took place in the period from 03/23/2020 to 05/03/2020. Using the inclusion criteria: being from the last 15 years, national and presenting a relation to the research object, 57 articles were found through the databases: SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), VHL Brazil (Virtual Health Library) and Google Scholar, using DECS (Health Sciences Descriptors): Breastfeeding, Nurse, Compliance. After exploratory and selective reading, 25 articles that met the criteria were separated. It was found that nurses primarily through an affective bond to gain the confidence of the gestation in the suggested guidelines for breastfeeding and have a positive result in the adherence process carry out health communication. Thus, exposure about the benefits of breastfeeding, clarifying doubts of the pregnant woman, instructions on breast care, problems that can happen and raising awareness of the family as support for pregnant women are the communication tools addressed during the whole pregnancy. Therefore, the role of the nurse professional with efficient health communication is essential for adherence to breastfeeding, through appropriate health education to reach the pregnant woman and demystify fears and stigmas is essential to ensure adherence to breastfeeding. In addition, investments in training professionals and public policies in the area are also relevant.
